HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — More than 100,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into Mud Creek this week after a contractor damaged part of the city of Hendersonville’s sewer system, city officials said.

The spill began Tuesday evening, Dec. 16, 2025, and continued into the early morning hours Wednesday before city staff were notified at 6:28 a.m., according to a news release. Crews stopped the discharge within about 20 minutes, by 6:45 a.m.

City officials said the spill was caused by a contractor performing sewer system improvements near 310 Williams St. An estimated 100,400 gallons of untreated wastewater were released, with a portion reaching Mud Creek, a tributary in the French Broad River Basin.

Cleanup efforts are underway, and the city is working with the contractor to ensure corrective measures are taken, officials said.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources was notified Wednesday and will review the incident.

State law requires public notification when wastewater spills of 1,000 gallons or more reach surface waters.

For more information, residents may contact Hendersonville Water and Sewer at 828-697-3073 or the DEQ Asheville Regional Office at 828-296-4500.
