ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville recorded a record amount of rainfall at the airport Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, 4.49 inches of rain was recorded at Asheville Regional Airport by 4:40 p.m. Thursday, shattering the old record for the day of 1.71 inches set in 1956.

“But it was still raining, thus the actual record will be higher,” the National Weather Service said in a statement.

Records for the Asheville area date to 1869.

The deluge that started Wednesday sent the French Broad River out of its banks by Thursday. Here’s a look at some of the flooding in the River Arts District and Craven Street areas.

Rains also sent area creeks out of their banks and caused problems with area roads. Here’s a look at a sinkhole that formed on Old Leicester Highway on Thursday evening.
