ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Butterfly Trail is set to dedicate its fourth station at Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, this one celebrating the Summer Azure butterfly.
The dedication is set for 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at 1056 Merrimon Ave. Extra parking will be available at North Asheville Library.
The Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter and Bee City USA-Asheville partnered to host the new station, which highlights the ecological role of butterflies and moths in supporting bird populations. According to organizers, a single nest of chickadees requires 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to fledge.
Paula Caycedo, a Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter board member and Bee City Asheville Leadership Committee member, will represent the Summer Azure during the event. The butterfly is notable for its color variation — emerging blue in spring and lavender in summer.
The Asheville Butterfly Trail aims to install at least 10 stations across Buncombe County, each featuring a different butterfly species and encouraging residents to plant native vegetation to support their survival.
