ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville City Council has appointed DK Wesley as the city’s next manager, effective Jan. 12, 2026.

Wesley, who has more than 25 years of experience in city and county administration, has spent the past six and a half years as an assistant county manager for Buncombe County. City officials said her background in organizational transformation, community partnership building, and operational leadership made her the top choice.

Mayor Esther Manheimer said Wesley will play a key role in Asheville’s continued recovery from Tropical Storm Helene while leading a workforce of more than 1,200 employees.

“Wesley’s leadership, experience and commitment to community will help ensure we not only rebuild stronger but continue to move forward on the many projects and initiatives that make Asheville a welcoming, vibrant and desirable place to live,” Manheimer said, adding that Wesley’s time with Buncombe County brings valuable regional knowledge.

Wesley’s career spans work in budget and finance, human resources, public safety, emergency management, development services, health and human services and organizational development. She is known for her collaborative style and focus on improving service delivery, officials said.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as city manager for Asheville,” Wesley said in a statement. “I look forward to supporting the mayor and city council, investing in a strong organizational culture and partnering with the community to build a thriving, resilient and inclusive future for all Asheville residents.”

Assistant City Manager Ben Woody will serve as interim manager until Wesley takes office.
