ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As summer winds down and children prepare to head back to class, local school districts are taking a look at their bus services.
Buncombe County Schools Transportation Director Jeremy Stowe said the district has enough drivers for its 210 buses.
“Right now, we have each and every bus covered. But we can always use more people,” he said.
People who don’t want to work full-time can put their names on the list to be substitute drivers or drive for field trips or sporting events, the district’s Chief Communications Officer Ken Ulmer said.

The district’s 210 buses cover about 15,000 miles a day delivering 10,000 students to school, Stowe said.
“We try to continue that kind of push and say we can always use more folks,” Stowe said. “Feel free to reach out and help us deliver happiness.”
For those who are interested in becoming a school bus driver, the district pays for training, the physical and drug test, he said.
“It’s zero out of pocket,” Stowe said. “We can always use the help.”

Asheville City Schools officials said the district is also fully staffed with drivers for its 29 yellow buses and 14 activity buses.
The buses serve three to five schools each, delivering a total of 1,541 students across the district.
