Buncombe County inmate dies after being found unconscious

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A man being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility died Wednesday after he was found unconscious in his cell, authorities said.

Christopher Morrow, who was booked into the jail late Sept. 16 on an injuring or tampering with a vehicle charge, was discovered unresponsive just before 4 a.m. Sept. 17, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Morrow was taken to Mission Hospital, where his bond was unsecured for medical treatment. He was pronounced dead shortly before 3 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

The N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

The sheriff’s office said it has notified Morrow’s family, the State Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s Office. Officials said protocols for detainee deaths are being followed.
