CANTON, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Water levels in Canton’s Spruce Tank continued to rise slowly Sunday afternoon, though officials said normal water usage is slowing the recovery as Stage 2 water conservation measures and a boil water advisory remain in effect.

Town officials warned that the water system remains in a fragile state, particularly for customers in the Spruce Street area, and that additional major leaks could lead to further service disruptions.

Crews attempted to start pumps Sunday morning but were unable to do so because tank levels were still slightly below the threshold needed to operate. Officials said they will continue trying to restart the pumps throughout the day.

Residents are being strongly encouraged to limit water use as much as possible to allow the system to recover and restore full service. While no leaks have been reported, officials asked residents to report any suspected leaks by calling the town’s on-call service at 828-648-2376.

As main tanks refill, customers may experience brief periods of low water pressure or temporary outages before water is pushed back into the Spruce Street area. Officials said this is normal system operation and is more noticeable due to the currently low levels in the Spruce Street tank.

Customers whose water service is not restored by 8 a.m. Monday are asked to notify the town at 828-648-2363 so crews can investigate potential issues. If service is still not restored by 2 p.m. Thursday, residents should call 828-648-2376 to report the outage.

The town said updates will be posted on its social media platforms, on cantonnc.com, and once daily through Everbridge. Officials noted that those sites are not actively monitored for reports.

Town officials apologized for the interruption and thanked residents for their patience and cooperation as crews work to stabilize the system.
