ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Travelers heading through the mountains this Thanksgiving should be prepared for delays on Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation reminded drivers that ongoing repairs from Tropical Storm Helene have reduced the highway to one lane in each direction, with lower speed limits and no shoulders.

“Take it slow, enjoy the mountain views and arrive safely to those who are thankful to see you,” the NCDOT said in a social media post.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and drive cautiously through the construction zone.
