SWANNANOA, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A section of Davidson Road in Buncombe County near Swannanoa will close later this month for a bridge replacement project expected to last about six months, officials said.

According to a notice shared by Swannanoa Fire & Rescue, the Davidson Road Bridge between Bee Tree Road and New Salem Road will be closed beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, March 23.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said its contractor will shut down the roadway while crews remove and replace the bridge over the Swannanoa River. The work is part of the agency’s Emergency Express Design-Build program addressing damage from Tropical Storm Helene.

Officials said the closure is expected to remain in place for approximately six months. A detour route will be in effect during construction.

Drivers are urged to plan ahead and follow posted detour signs.
