ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two small earthquakes were recorded Monday evening near the Macon-Jackson county line in the North Carolina mountains, according to federal officials.
The strongest quake measured a magnitude of 2.7 and occurred at 8:04 p.m. local time about 6.2 miles southwest of Dillsboro, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake was recorded at a depth of about 0.06 miles, and initial “Did You Feel It?” reports indicated light shaking in the area.
A second, smaller earthquake registered at magnitude 1.7 about 6.8 miles south-southwest of Dillsboro, according to the USGS. That quake occurred at 11:13 p.m. at a depth of about 0.6 miles.
The U.S. National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg noted both earthquakes in a social media post Tuesday morning and asked residents if they felt the tremors.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and it was not immediately clear how widely the earthquakes were felt across western North Carolina.
