After 27 years in Asheville, I finally made it to Oyster House — a West Asheville staple I’d somehow overlooked until now.

This place is very much a neighborhood bar and grill that feels trapped in time on the Coast, a couple decades ago. Along with all the cheeky verbiage and beach puns on the wall, they serve their own beer, liquor, a wide array of fried seafood and even have an Oyster Happy Hour (3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday).

For drinks, we had a beer and a cocktail. I chose the Venice Beach IPA and found it to be decent. Her Mezcal drink was mostly Mezcal, but she didn’t hate it.

We started with the Bourbon Pimento Mac and Cheese because … how could we not? This dish was perfect. It felt homemade with its panko crunch and generous pile of chives on top. Absolutely delicious.

For my entree, I chose the Oyster Po’ Boy: A hefty portion of fried oysters and andouille sausage with remoulade, lettuce, tomato and onion on the best hoagie roll I’ve had in this town. I adored this sandwich. I want to go grab another one right now! For my side, I had the clam chowder, and I chose well. Wow.

She had the Carolina Trout: A grilled filet over Cajun tater wedges and seasonal diced veggies, all smothered in a creamy Cajun crawfish ragout. We both loved this one as well, and ate a couple meals’ worth of leftovers out of it. Seriously, an amazing portion. I highly recommend it.

We wanted the token beach restaurant key lime pie for dessert, but we were far too stuffed. Maybe next time.

This is a lovely spot. Cozy for date night, or a great place to meet up with friends for drinks on the patio. I want to try everything on the menu. The prices were reasonable, and it had my favorite charm: Asheville 20 years ago.
