YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Residents along the South Toe River may see low-flying helicopters this week as crews work to remove debris from the waterway, county officials said.

According to Yancey County Emergency Management, helicopter debris removal operations will take place Wednesday and Thursday with assistance from Operation Helo and local emergency management personnel.

The cleanup is part of an ongoing effort to restore the river in an environmentally friendly way following impacts from Tropical Storm Helene.

Officials said residents can expect increased activity near the river and should remain alert for helicopters entering and exiting the area. They also urged the public to keep a safe distance from all active removal sites.

“Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to restore and protect our community,” the county said in a statement.
