Henderson County man charged after shooting that killed child

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Henderson County man has been charged with felony possession of a firearm by a felon and felony serious negligent child abuse following a shooting that left a child dead, authorities said.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a report of a gunshot victim in the Zirconia community in the early hours of Oct. 8. Emergency personnel provided medical care on scene, and the victim was transported to Mission Hospital, where they died Oct. 9 despite life-saving efforts.

The sheriff’s office Violent Crimes Unit led the investigation. Justin David Sherrill, 34, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, according to authorities.

Officials declined to release further details, citing the ongoing investigation and pending court proceedings.
