ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for several counties in Western North Carolina ahead of a system expected to produce light snow along Tennessee border areas from late Friday through Saturday morning. The coldest days are expected to be Sunday and Monday before a warm up for Christmas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 1 p.m. Saturday for Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Swain and Yancey counties above 3,500 feet along the Tennessee border.

The forecast calls for up to 4 inches of snow and wind gusts as high as 45 mph.

A Winter Weather Advisory means periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
slippery roads and use caution while driving.

The weekend forecast, according to the National Weather Service:

  • Friday: A chance of rain showers after 3 p.m. mixing with snow after 5 p.m. Patchy fog before 9 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny with a high near 49. Light north-northeast wind becoming northwest 11 to 16 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.
  • Friday night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers, mainly between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy with a low around 26. North-northwest wind 14 to 18 mph with gusts as high as 34 mph. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.
  • Saturday: Partly sunny with a high near 37. North-northwest wind 11 to 14 mph with gusts as high as 26 mph.
  • Saturday night: Mostly clear with a low around 18. North-northwest wind 3 to 8 mph.
  • Sunday: Sunny with a high near 42.
  • Sunday night: Clear with a low around 20.
