Morning crash causes delays on I-40 near Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsnOW) — An early morning crash closed multiple lanes of Interstate 40 in Buncombe County on Monday, causing significant traffic delays near Asheville.

The wreck occurred around 6:43 a.m. near mile marker 45, just east of the Smokey Park Highway exit (U.S. 19). The left two lanes of the eastbound side of the interstate were closed after Exit 44, leaving only one of three lanes open, according to traffic officials.

The closures are causing heavy congestion. The incident was expected to affect traffic for about an hour, with lanes scheduled to reopen by approximately 7:43 a.m.

No information was immediately available on injuries or the cause of the crash.
