ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to convert the intersection of Aiken Road and New Stock Road in Buncombe County into an all-way stop, officials said Tuesday.

The change is intended to improve safety and reduce crash risks at the offset intersection, where NCDOT documented 10 crashes over the past five years, including several angle collisions.

Crews will install oversized stop signs with all-way placards on New Stock Road, along with warning signs indicating a new traffic pattern and “stop ahead” notices. New pavement markings will also be added.

According to NCDOT data, all-way stops can reduce total crashes by 55 percent, fatal and serious injury crashes by 92 percent and frontal-impact crashes with minor injuries by 72 percent.

Drivers approaching an all-way stop are reminded to:

  • Yield to the first vehicle to arrive.
  • Yield to the vehicle on the right when two vehicles arrive simultaneously.
  • Use turn signals and yield as appropriate when turning or moving straight through the intersection.
  • Exercise caution to avoid collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians, even when holding the right of way.
