ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — This weekend marks one year since Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina. In remembrance of the hardships endured by the Asheville community since the storm, local pastry shop Old Europe Pastries will donate 100% of sales made on the day of the anniversary to continued relief efforts.

Baked goods for BeLoved Asheville

From 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, 100% of the proceeds from every sale made at Old Europe will be donated to BeLoved Asheville, a local nonprofit that has spearheaded Helene relief in WNC.

Everything sold at Old Europe online and in-store that Saturday, including coffee and cocktails, will go to BeLoved. Old Europe pastries range from staples like chocolate chip cookies and eclairs to more exotic items like Turo Berry Torte and pistachio macarons.

The idea for the donation came directly from Old Europe owner Melinda Vetro.

“She just looked at me one day, and she said, ‘We have to do something,'” recalled Abigail Schrupp, Old Europe general manager. “She’s like, ‘We’re gonna give back.’ I was like, ‘That’s great.’ And then she said, ‘All of it.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean, all of it?’ And she said, ‘All of the sales.’ I was like, okay, let’s do it.”

In the aftermath of the storm last fall, Old Europe became a community hub, providing food, coffee and a place to meet for Asheville residents during the initial chaos of power outages and unreliable access to hot meals.

“We just wanted to be able to continue giving back in the way that we’re able, because we wouldn’t be able to even be here today if people didn’t come back to Asheville, and come back and support us after all the water came back on,” said Schrupp.
