Wintry mix delays start of classes in some Asheville area schools

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A mix of rain, sleet and snow began falling across the region early Monday, with the first bands of precipitation arriving around 3 a.m. in the Asheville area.

According to the National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg, rain is expected to shift to a wintry mix, including light sleet and snow, mainly at elevations above 3,500 feet. Officials urged drivers to watch for slippery spots on roads early Monday.

The forecast prompted several school districts in the Asheville area to delay the start of classes Monday. Those include:

Avery County Schools: Two-hour delay
Madison County Schools: Two-hour delay
Mayland Community College: Two-hour delay
Mitchell County Schools: Two-hour delay
Yancey County Schools: Two-hour delay
